Our Story
The Donald Berman Yaldei Developmental Center was founded in 1998 in Boisbriand, Quebec, by Menachem and Devorah Leifer, new parents of two children with severe developmental delays.
Frustrated by the lack of adequate and readily available support, the couple resolved to help themselves while helping other families in the community. Yaldei began in a private home with just three children and three staff. Through the rapid and intensive treatment intervention, the children began to make miraculous progress within this humble facility.
Early in its history, Yaldei grew beyond the small house as the centre moved to the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex, a central location in the heart of Montreal. Along with the centre’s expansion, a variety of therapeutic, educational and recreational services also developed. In addition to the intensive Early Intervention program, the centre now offers over 15 therapeutic treatments and various programs, including a summer camp and a weekend respite program for children and their families. Day by day, more and more children overcome their obstacles and Yaldei begins to be recognized as a beacon of hope for families in need.

In 2006, Yaldei obtained a license and opened a school under the same roof as the therapy center, while establishing satellite programs in two Montreal elementary schools. By 2012, over 170 children were receiving treatment each year!
More help and more services required more space, Yaldei’s ambition grew beyond the single floor now in use. The vision of a large new building meant the need for large support. Through conviction, community generosity and perseverance, Yaldei’s dream reached new heights. In 2016, Yaldei moved to a modern 40,000 square foot facility. Today, we work with over 25 schools across the greater Montreal area and help 276 children each year, whether they have autism or over 35 other cognitive or physical challenges or delays.
Despite its exponential growth over the past 20 years, Yaldei’s vision and essence remain proudly intact. We remain committed to helping transform the lives of those who need us most, facilitating the process of discovering and unlocking the greatest untapped potential in every child in special needs.
